Aptera Ruins
Situated just a short distance from the village centre of Megala Chorafia, the Aptera site dates back to the 7th century BC and Minoan times. Its name appears in the tablets of Knossos as one of the largest cities in Crete and was continuously inhabited until an earthquake destroyed it in the 7th century AD.
Most of the ruins on this large site have not yet been fully excavated but you can see impressive Roman cisterns, a Greek temple, Byzantine remains and a monastery established there in the 12th century.
To the north western end is a Turkish fortress with superb views of Souda Bay. In spring the site is full of wild flowers and herbs with breathtaking views of the snow capped White Mountains.
